Tips for Reducing Stress

Are you often feeling stressed?  You’re not alone.

We all experience stress at some point in our lives. If untreated, stress can adversely affect our health. Although you can’t eliminate stress entirely, there are ways to manage it.

When Life gives you Lemons…
Smell them.  Studies show that the smell of lemons – and any citrus – can reduce anxiety and stress.

Repaint your Walls.
The colors of your walls, floors and furniture affect your mood. Cool colors such as blue, violet and green are most soothing and create a sense of calm.

Just Smile.
Smiling releases endorphins and serotonin – the body’s natural stress busters.  Plus, smiling is quick, easy, and free.

Three Great Ways to Start Your Day
1. Sing in the shower. Or in the car on your way to work. Studies show that singing to music can greatly reduce stress levels. Don’t worry if you don’t feel like belting out a tune – just listening to music can also reap benefits.

2. Eat a stress-fighting breakfast. A bowl of fortified whole-grain cereal provides many essential vitamins, minerals and antioxidants and low-fat milk adds protein and calcium. Combine with an orange, grapefruit or handful of blueberries for free-radical fighting, stress-busting vitamin C.

3. Get moving…slowly. The slow, yet controlled movements of yoga and tai chi not only provide the benefits of physical activity but also promote muscle relaxation, mental focus, clarity and calmness. Even a few minutes of simple stretching can reduce tension.

Unconventional Tension Tamers
Playing with kids, pets or just by yourself: Playing can be a great diversion. Even if you’re alone, never underestimate a quick game of solitaire or Sudoku when you’re feeling frazzled.
Gardening: Being outdoors and physically active is a natural stress release, plus the rewards of beautiful flowers and delicious fruits and vegetables are a bonus.
Cleaning: The meditative and repetitive act of cleaning can decrease stress and create more comforting surroundings.
